While Orpheus could bend the world to his will, and charm all living things with music and song, he could not convince the Raven to reveal to him the Light.
The Light that would allow him to see the past and the future at once, so that he could understand the present. As he watched the cunning Raven dancing to his musical charms, the bird cried: "Orpheus, never look back!" revealing to him glimpses of light hidden in plain sight behind the darkness of his raised wings.
"It takes only a few determined minds and a cause that won't be heard to create a rebellion!" cried Orpheus. "Now close your eyes and open your mind to see the truth," appealed the Raven.
The Cape Rebellion is a story that starts with episodes of coincidence, good fortune and sheer determination. In 1925 the decision to cross Pinot Noir with Cinsaut to produce the world's first Pinotage met waves of criticism. But through adversity, the Rebels prevailed to afford Pinotage its rightful place on the world stage.
In their search for answers to the great questions of life, Orpheus and the Raven’s eyes were opened by the light of the present.
But the curious pair knew that beyond the light, the universe had more to offer.
“True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing, Orpheus,” said the Raven. “Then the answer to the ultimate question is obviously 42!” replied Orpheus in delight.
The concept behind The Swansong range of wines, has evolved from the first release in 2016. In a 2020 vintage dominated by a global pandemic, Raven’s wise words to Orpheus rings true more than ever:
