The Vinoneers is a platform created by a winemaker and a designer to express their creative indulgence without restraint. Not lead by sales volumes, market share or consumer insight, this is a pure expression of the love for fine wine and art.
By creating only the finest small batch, hand-crafted wines and engagingly tactile packaging with an unique artistic feel, the synergy between wine and art is tangible.

42 - Orpheus & the Raven

Small Batch Red Blend

“The answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe and Everything is 42” - Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

In their search for answers to the great questions of life, Orpheus and the Raven’s eyes were opened by the light of the present.

But the curious pair knew that beyond the light, the universe had more to offer.
“True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing, Orpheus,” said the Raven. “Then the answer to the ultimate question is obviously 42!” replied Orpheus in delight.

"ORPHEUS NEVER STOP SEARCHING"

With our belief to always look ahead and carry irony by our sides, we had to look to the past to reveal the future.

This Cape Blend celebrates the heritage and origins of Pinotage and its parent cultivars Pinot Noir and Cinsaut.

Fruit from terroir-specific vineyards, which compliments the cultivar, was handpicked to amalgamate into a beautifully complex and well-structured wine.

The grapes were vinified and aged separately in oak barrels (50% new) for 18 months prior to blending and bottling on 25 April 2017.

Orpheus & the Raven

42 year old Bush Vines - Wooded Chenin Blanc

While Orpheus could bend the world to his will, and charm all living things with music and song, he could not convince the Raven to reveal to him the Light.

The Light that would allow him to see the past and the future at once, so that he could understand the present. As he watched the cunning Raven dancing to his musical charms, the bird cried: ‘Orpheus, never look back!’ - revealing to him glimpses of light hidden in plain sight behind the darkness of his raised wings.

"ORPHEUS, NEVER LOOK BACK!"

The Vinoneers Orpheus and the Raven Wooded Chenin Blanc 2015 is the culmination of three years worth of fermenting ideas between the two – each bringing his unique skill set to the sorting table!

Amongst the unique features of the Vinoneer Chenin Blanc, is the grapes from which it is made.  The vines were planted in 1973, making it two years older than the Vinoneers! The 42 year old bush vines are located across the T-junction between Tygerberg Valley and Race Course Roads in Durbanville, Cape Town. The grapes were hand-picked on the 25th of February 2014 in the cool morning hours at 22.8º Balling. After harvest, the grapes were cooled overnight to 10 ºC prior to vinification. The grapes were subsequently sorted, de-stemmed, crushed, pressed and allowed to cold settle over two days. The juice was pumped to 2 barrels and fermented under Etienne’s watchful eyes outside his office. The new 500 litre French oak barrel was affectionately christened “Makulu Makulu” by Etienne’s cellar staff!

The wine underwent spontaneous malolactic fermentation in barrel, after which it was left on the lees without sulphur addition for 12 months. Matured for a total of 17 months in French oak [1 x 500 litre (2015 barrel), 1 x 300 litre (2010 barrel)]. The wine was bottled by a small scale bottling unit operated by Amata on 22 July 2015.

The Vinoneers

The Vinoneers is a unique partnership between Etienne Louw (Altydgedacht Estate) and Brenden Schwartz (Bravodesign). Brenden and Etienne have worked together since 2010, and the two have become good friends through the years. The name “Vinoneers” harks back to Etienne’s previous life as a chemical engineer, while the name of the wine shadows the famous Greek play “ Orpheus and the Underworld” – which encourages us to never look back!

Etienne Louw - Winemaker
Etienne Louw has been an estate winemaker in Durbanville since 2005. He carries degrees in both Chemical Engineering and Viticulture and Oenology from the University of Stellenbosch. He has made multiple award-winning wines acoss a wide range of cultivars, and is also a keen vinyl record collector and guitar performer. His favourite pasttime is building Lego sets with his two sons, while listening to 70’s blues rock and 80’s pop in his man-cave.

Hand Crafted Wine

Orpheus & the Raven range epitomizes hand-crafted winemaking. The estate-grown grapes fermented and aged in small barrels outside of Etienne’s cellar office and Brenden's hand drawn label. Inspired by the etchings of the grand masters such as (Albrecht Dürer) and the story that each elaborate scene tells, while exploring the symbolism that is hidden within.

The labels were printed on a beautifully restored 1955 Heidelberg Platen press by Brenden’s wife, Lise. Each pack was hand produced label waxed and individually numbered by Etienne and Brenden – the final touch being Etienne's signature of each of bottle produced.
